A few colleagues who were familiar with Cixin Liu's work had given me a heads up as to the conservative, hawkish politics of the author...
...and I also agree with their assessments of the shallow, underdeveloped characters that drive the narrative forward...
...but it does examine, in depth, deterrence and game theory on a galactic scale, as well as posit a unique response to Fermi's paradox.
In the current geopolitical climate, it's a must read, though approach it understanding the author's out to make a pitch for isolationism.
